Tools: Scissors

Here’s a test; if I show you my latest tool acquisition, what do you say?

scissors

If the answer is ‘Ooooh!’ or even ‘Squeee!’ than you may be a scissor junkie.

These are going to be my Extra Special, Hands-off-if-you-know-what’s-good-for-you, Don’t-even-think-about-it scissors. I think I’ve trained everyone in the house to beware of my fabric scissors, but just in case, I’ve made myself a little display/storage area for them well out of the reach of wee fingers. (Don’t worry, both Dragon and LYM have their own scissors, I’m not a despot!)

scissors on the wall

I’ve had my eye on these since I saw a photofilm by The Department of Small Works (Nick Hand spoke at the Folksy Summer School) of the cutlers at Ernest Wright & Son. Partly I loved it because it reminded me of the summer when I worked in a sporran factory (yes, I know) and partly it just made me want gorgeous scissors!

The only problem is that they’re so lovely, I’m almost loath to cut with them…

Misericordia and Morningside Makers Markets

Right, Resolution #1 out of the way!

I’ve just booked myself in for five craft fairs at the lovely Morningside Makers Market at the Columcille Centre in Edinburgh!

fair helper

(My ginger assistant will not be joining me, alas!)

The fairs are on:

  • 1 March, 2014
  • 3 May, 2014
  • 6 September, 2014
  • 1 November, 2014
  • 15 November, 2014

I’ll have work for sale and will be taking commissions for custom pieces!

You can see my Misericordia appearances on a calendar here.

Nothing’s Sure but…

This post is brought to you by my tax return…so it’s about chocolate.

This is my tippy top extra favourite working at home elevensies, but only when the Lovely Young Man is at work because it has [peanut butter*] in it and he and [peanut butter**] are not friends.

I thought I’d got the recipe from the Interwebz somewhere, but apparently (surprise, surprise) I made it up by combining other recipes.

Click on the photo for a link to a version with dates, cashews, raisins, cocoa and vanilla.

I’d like to pretend that mine look gorgeous like the ones in the photo but I tend to eat them half-formed out of a bowl with a spoon (and a guilty expression on my face).

Guilty Pleasure Elevensies

2-ish medjool dates (but I’ve used just plain dates)
about 1 tablespoon porridge oats
1 teaspoon cocoa
1-2 tablespoons peanut butter

Squish dates to paste with the back of a spoon, add cocoa and peanut butter and goodgie about until they are satisfactorily mixed. Add enough oats to make it the texture of your choice. If you’re feeling fancy, roll them into balls, otherwise consume with coffee for super-charged productivity until lunchtime. If it’s Monday, add chocolate pieces.

I make no claims as to the health benefits or otherwise of these things, especially as I’m pretty sure the serving size is miniscule, but it’s got to be better than a Hostess cupcake.

A Little Light Relief

I have a bit of a starting problem when it comes to craft projects, I love planning – I’m pretty good at starting and I’m dreadful at finishing things!

I’ve found that the embroideries have helped a lot, they give me the thrill of planning and starting and have conveniently strict deadlines for finishing.

The only other problem is that it’s hard to feel like I’m relaxing from embroidery by doing hand sewing. So Dragon’s quilt isn’t going very quickly, but I’ve been doing some knitting instead.

blankets 1

The first two were blankets for twins which took me about nine months to make (quite a nice symmetry to that), and were rather bigger than I expected (see previous parenthetical statement).

blankets 2

I started another, rather bigger knitting project recently, but I’ll tell you more about that soon!

Resolved

I was going to write a post looking back on my New Year’s resolutions from last year, but apparently I didn’t make any.

Seriously hand embroidery - Misericordia 2012

I know people are a bit down on resolutions, but I kind of like them. It’s a bit like a list that has a 12 month deadline and as long as you aren’t too specific or over-enthusiastic then they can give your memory a wee jog as to where you were at the end of the previous year.

So, here are mine:

  1. Make myself a regular feature at Edinburgh craft fairs. It’s rare that someone will buy something from me as an impulse purchase, so I need to be more visible so that I’m there when they’re ready to buy or commission something.
  2. Contact more press outlets so I can get my work seen more widely. (This is terrifying…)
  3. (Updated as of 24th December) Don’t delete my website at 10pm on Christmas Eve in an attempt to tidy up. (The Lovely Young Man lived up to his name and found it again..)

How about you? Do you make New Year’s resolutions (or delete things at inappropriate times)? If you’re feeling brave, you could even post your resolutions or deletions!

Further Balderdash and a Little More Nonsense

Those of you who are avid readers may remember that I made Dragon a costume from one of his favourite books.

Dragon's Costume by Misericordia

He received a lovely illustration from Holly Swain, who drew the pictures.

But it has taken me rather a long time to get everything organised…until now. So here are the two, ready for their close-up!

sgt rockhard

I’m really very pleased that he’s got a whole wall full of original art, you can’t start moulding their taste too young.

From left to right are Dragon’s bris certificate (very limited edition!), my embroidery of his Hebrew name, two prints from Penelope and Pip, and our own Sergeant Rockhard. Then at the bottom, Lucinda, Amos, Bunny and Little Lamb.

That reminds me, I did some drawings of Little Lamb and Bunny that I keep meaning to do something with. What do you think?

Made in Scotland gift guide 2013

Well it’s getting a little busy around Misericordia Mansions.

Peace hand embroidery - Misericordia 2012

No sooner had I got over the thrill of seeing my guest blog post on the Fred Aldous website, than Made in Scotland magazine featured my Peace hoop in their Christmas 2013 gift guide!

Made in Scotland 2013

Don’t forget that the last posting date to guarantee Christmas delivery is today Friday, 20th December. If you’re in Edinburgh, why not come see me at the Morningside Makers Market (try saying that 10 times fast!) tomorrow Saturday, 21st December?

Morningside Makers Market – 21 December 2013

I’m going to be at the Morningside Makers Market craft fair this Saturday and I’m busy getting myself prepared!

cards 1

Just before my degree show (almost 10 years ago!) I ordered some business cards. The world of printing was not like it is today kids, and I had to send off a real print of my image and let someone else do the hard work of scanning it in and making sure everything fit.

cards 2

We also had to buy something like 1000 (it felt more like 10,000) cards at a time, and so I tried to make them fairly generic, having an inkling that my artistic productions may change before I managed to hand out all of my cards.

cards 3

Lo and behold I was right, so I’m busy updating my business cards with something a little more appealing than the address labels I’d been using before.

cards 4

A mere 873 left to do! Do come along this weekend and get your hands on a card (and maybe more)! If you can’t make it, don’t forget that the last UK post is Friday, 20th December (that’s this week).

Fred Aldous Guest Post

I recently wrote a guest post for Fred Aldous, so I thought I’d introduce you to one of my favourite art shops!

Fred Aldous has been trading in Manchester since 1886, and while fashions in beards come and go, they have steadily supplied a truly astonishing range of art supplies. Time was when the Lovely Young Man wasn’t so keen on letting me go in unattended for fear I would spend all of the beer and cereal money on exciting sketchbooks.

In addition to selling some of my very useful supplies, such as hoops, mini canvases and Leuchtturm notebooks they have studio spaces where you can try your hand at laser cutting, borrow a photo studio or try their photo booth out!

If you’re not local, they’ve got a great online shop (but I can definitely recommend poking around in the shop if you get a chance, you can tell how serious your art supply addiction is by how far down the various sets of stairs you wander.)

Here’s a copy of my post, or follow the link to explore more Fred Aldous.

My name is Katy Bromberg and I create hand embroidered text art in Edinburgh as Misericordia.

I love you - I know hand embroidery - Misericordia 2013

I am very interested in the interplay between text and context; or what our experiences bring to our interpretation of a word or phrase. Particularly since communication is veering away from text which is shaped by our hands or voices, I want to explore the additional meanings that can be brought to mechanically produced words by font and colour.

Joy hand embroidered hoop - Misericordia 2012

I have chosen to present my work as framed pieces rather than, for instance, cushions or other housewares because I want my work to give text a value that is not utilitarian. There is so much text washing over us these days that I wanted to allow words to have the space to linger in the mind and on the tongue. The hoops and mini canvases from Fred Aldous give me a way to make less formal pieces while still giving each word or letter an iconic status.

I Love You hand embroidery - Misericordia 2013

I use hand embroidery for the same reason, it brings an analogue finish to what is essentially a digital form of communication. Working by hand also gives me time with each piece. Sometimes I feel like I am being guided by the piece more than being in charge of its creation. This lion had some very particular ideas about how he was going to present himself!

Even in my commissioned work, I can sometimes send subtle messages while still giving the customer control over their piece. For instance, I used the colours of the Suffragette movement in this baby’s name piece in the hopes that it would inspire courage and dedication to good causes.

Paloma hand embroidery - Misericordia 2012

Earlier this year, I had an exhibition at Trove in Levenshulme, Manchester. The work explored the relationship between food and other human appetites – love and money. The Staff of Life used fabric I had designed around the idea of endless consumption with fonts and colours inspired by currency.

Sweet Nothings demonstrated just how monochrome our favourite terms of endearments are.

Sweet Nothings by Misericordia 2013

Sometimes, it’s all about the font. Inspired by a friend’s love of mid-century modern, I decided to make a hipster sampler.

Helvetica hand embroidered canvas - Misericordia 2012

…and no discussion of the most perfect font can be complete without its antithesis – Comic Sans. (One to annoy the graphic designers.)

I’m always looking for new ways to encourage people to think about their words, I’d love to hear what you have to say!

Hoopy Holidays

The last posting date for for Europe and the USA is Friday, 13th December!

Xmas Atmos hand embroidered hoop - Misericordia 2012

Rather fortuitously, when I was unpacking moving boxes, I stumbled on a rather large cache of holiday-themed hoop embroideries that never made it out into the wide world last year. I made them for a Christmas craft fair, but was slightly overwhelmed with orders and never even got them photographed!

Noel hand embroidery - Misericordia 2012

So voila!, here is round one of festive hoop-la, they’re all up for sale on my website and my re-opened Folksy shop.

Even if you don’t get anything from me, please go visit Folksy for the best in British craft, it’s a really lovely site!
